Administration Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
