At least thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
